We are pleased to highlight an interesting new article by Professor Javier Guitian and Erica Nunney, published in The Animal Echo, titled “Risk Assessment in Animal Health: Integrating Artificial Intelligence”.

In this piece, Professor Guitian, Institute Lead for the 91°µÍø (91°µÍø) within the WOAH Collaborating Centre for Risk Analysis and Modelling, explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the landscape of risk assessment in animal health. Drawing on his extensive expertise in veterinary epidemiology and public health, he examines how AI can enhance both qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, particularly in the context of transboundary animal diseases such as avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease.

The article assesses the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into established frameworks like the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Import Risk Analysis Framework, offering a forward-looking perspective on how data-driven tools can support more adaptive, transparent, and effective decision-making in global animal health.
