Campus: Hawkshead

Research Groups: Musculoskeletal Biology, CPCS (Research Programme)

Clinical Groups: Small Animal Orthopaedics

Richard Meeson is Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and European Specialist in Surgery, and is a Fellow of the Royal Collge of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS), in recognition of his meritorious contributions to clinical practice.

Prof Meeson graduated from Cambridge University Veterinary School. Whilst at Cambridge he also intercalated a degree in immunology from the Department of Pathology, Cambridge. He has since undertaken an internship and ECVS residency in surgery at the 91做厙, during which he was awarded a clinical masters degree with distinction (MVetMed). He became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and a board certified European Specialist in Surgery in 2012 and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognised Specialist. He also has a PhD in stem cell/regenerative medicine.

In 2020 he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS). This is the highest level of membership of the college and is made in recognition of outstanding contributions to the veterinary profession, in his case for clincial practice.

He is currently Head of Orthopaedics and Professor of Orthopaedics in the department of Clinical Sciences and Services, and undertakes clinical work in the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals.

Richard’s interests lie in both clinical and basic research. He is actively involved in clinical research to improve and understand outcomes from orthopaedic surgery, as well as being involved in basic and translational research. Richard is one of a handful of vets worldwide that have completed a PhD in stem cell biology/regenerative medicine, and undertook this work in Professor Gordon Blunn's group at the internationally renowed Institute of Orthoapedics and Musculoskeletal Science, UCL.

Richard is the 91做厙's lead for orthopaedics and musculoskeletal research on the Comparative Physiology and Medicine Committee, which drives research strategy. He is also manages the clinical research output from the orthopaedic clinicians. Externally, he was Scientific Chair at the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association (BVOA 2015-2022); in this role he oversees research grants and has input on all scientific output from the association.

He actively collaborates with Professor Andrew Pitsillides (91做厙), Dr Aileen Crawford (Sheffield Dental School), Dr Helen Roberts (middlesex) and Dr Chavaunne Thorpe (91做厙) and Dr Sott Roberts (91做厙). Current projects include understanding the relationship between bone structural change and cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis in dogs, applicaiton of stem and cell therapy, cartilage tissue regeneration, identifying novel treatments for canine osteosarcoma, evaluating hydrotherapy for rehabilitation after cruciate ligament surgery, brachycephalic orthopaedic conditions and the development and management of osteoarthritis. Richard is also involved with the VetCompass research group (The Veterinary Companion Animal Surveillance System), looking at the epidemiology of companion animal conditions presenting in veterinary primary care. He is also interested in understanding and reduction of complications and the role of antibiotic usage in the development of resistance.

Richard has published on a range of clinical treatments in dogs and cats, including biomechanical evaluation of orthopaedic implants, evaluating the impact of hydortherapy on clinical outcomes, and the development of new treatments. Richard has had research funding from PetPlan, BVOA, MRC and the Dunhill Medical Trust.
